The communications included letters, emails and text messages about possible undeclared tax. The reported total compares with 64,982 warnings in 2024/25 and 27,714 in 2023/24\. That amounts to an increase of roughly a quarter over the previous year and nearly three times the level two years earlier. UPay describes the communications as prompts for taxpayers to review their records and returns. Its report notes that receiving one does not by itself establish an unpaid liability or a formal investigation. It attributes to HMRC a statement that such messages are routinely used to educate and remind customers. The report connects the campaign with disposals that may be overlooked when no pounds are received. HMRC’s published guidance says a disposal can include selling tokens, exchanging them for another cryptoasset, using them for purchases or giving them to another person. Gifts to a spouse, civil partner or charity are treated separately in that guidance. For cryptoasset service providers, the next reporting date is also relevant. HMRC’s manual confirms that the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework began on January 1, 2026, with due-diligence and record-keeping obligations for providers within scope. The first reporting period runs through December 31, 2026, and the required information is due by May 31, 2027. UPay reports that the framework will expand the information available to HMRC about customer activity, including through international exchanges.
