The change checks the personal identification number immediately after the cardholder enters it, before the ATM displays its transaction-selection menu. That gives the machine an earlier opportunity to identify an incorrect PIN and provide feedback to the user. [Dan Ruppe](https://giftcard.news/person/dan-ruppe/), MAP's senior vice president of product services, described the change as a measure against fraud and unauthorized activity at cash machines. The company positioned earlier validation alongside monitoring and customer outreach as ways to intervene before a loss occurs. The announcement cited FICO's finding that balance inquiries accounted for 58% of attempted transactions in fraud cases in 2022\. That statistic refers to the attempted transactions within the fraud cases described, rather than all ATM transactions. MAP's offer applies to credit unions using its ATM processing services.
