The schedule placed Portal changes on June 10 and GivexPOS availability on June 11\. The setting is configurable, rather than a ban imposed on every merchant. [\[S03\]](#article-source-3) The business decision concerns where a merchant can enforce its stored-value policy. Restricting the tender at checkout can stop an unwanted transfer of value before it requires investigation or reversal later. It also puts a decision about acceptable customer behaviour into the software used by front-line staff. ## Why payments and gift card controls sit together Givex became part of [Shift4](https://giftcard.news/company/shift4/) through an acquisition completed in November 2024\. Shift4’s annual report describes a business combining payments revenue with software and related services. Gift card and loyalty functions therefore sit within a broader relationship with merchants, not as a standalone consumer gift shop. [\[S04\]](#article-source-4) For the supplier, dependable controls can help protect that relationship. A merchant using the same system for sales, rewards and reporting has a reason to value consistent records and configurable rules, even where an update does not create a new revenue-generating product. ## Preventing a transaction and recording an attempt The gift card and loyalty release also adds attempted balance checks on inactive cards to the Portal’s Certificate Details page for audit purposes. Separately, the bulk-processing tool is to send a completion email and report errors, changes the company links to reducing mistakes and duplicate processing. [\[S01\]](#article-source-1) These controls address different stages of an operation. The tender restriction can prevent a disallowed purchase. An inactive-card record gives staff evidence of an attempted enquiry. A processing confirmation helps an operator distinguish a completed request from one that may need attention. Neither an inactive-card enquiry nor an unusual tender choice proves fraudulent intent. A customer may be confused about a card’s status or a store’s policy. Better records help a merchant assess what happened; they do not remove the need to interpret the circumstances. ## The tradeoff is between control and flexibility A retailer that stops gift-card-funded gift card purchases reduces one way value can move from an existing balance into a new instrument. The same rule may also prevent a legitimate customer from combining or regifting value through that route. Making the setting optional lets the merchant choose according to its programme rules. The incentive is operational: fewer unwanted transactions or duplicate processing incidents could reduce the cost of reversals, support and investigation. The release does not report incident volumes or a measured reduction in losses, so those remain potential benefits of the controls. Shift4’s earlier May notice set out the system-update timetable; the feature descriptions followed in June. Nothing in these notes establishes a universal restriction on gift card use or a change in customers’ legal rights. They document merchant tools whose effect depends on deployment and policy choices.
