# Shift4 details gift card substitution and cashback adjustment APIs

Shift4's September gift card update targets failed orders and reward adjustments, addressing operational problems inside the Givex business it acquired in 2024.

[Shift4](https://giftcard.news/company/shift4/)'s September 11, 2026 release notes describe automatic gift card substitutions and a new way to adjust cashback after partial returns. Version 26.2 lists September 16 as its release date. The changes target exceptions that can otherwise interrupt an order or leave a reward balance inconsistent with the purchase. ## Gift cards inside a larger payments business

Shift4 completed its acquisition of [Givex](https://giftcard.news/company/givex/) in November 2024\. Its annual report identifies Givex as a supplier of gift cards, loyalty programmes and point-of-sale technology. Shift4's broader revenue model combines payment-volume and transaction fees with software subscriptions, placing gift and loyalty tools within a larger merchant relationship. That context explains why apparently small operational changes matter commercially. A merchant choosing integrated payments is also choosing the systems its staff will use when a card cannot be supplied or a customer returns part of an order. Reliable handling of those moments can help a provider retain the wider account. The release itself does not quantify that effect.

## A replacement is a configured product decision

Gift Card Order API 955 can use a merchant-configured replacement when the requested item is out of stock. The update also introduces adjustment of cashback issuance and redemption for partial returns or cancellations. Separate changes expose eligible item promotions and extend balance notifications to ticket transactions. [\[S01\]](#article-source-1)

Substitution can allow an order to continue without staff finding an alternative manually. But the merchant still decides what an acceptable replacement is. A different gift card may carry different restrictions, and replacing an unavailable catalogue item does not by itself establish that the customer agreed to any alternative.

The cashback change addresses another cost of running incentives: the original reward can become incorrect when the sale changes. A partial return requires a proportional business decision about the remaining entitlement. Providing an integration function can reduce manual correction work, while the merchant remains responsible for its reward rules.

## The commercial case is fewer exceptions

These changes continue the Gift Card & Loyalty product line previously released under the Givex name. The preceding 26.1 notes likewise describe account and balance controls, showing the operational setting in which the September APIs sit. [\[S02\]](#article-source-2)

For a merchant, the potential gain is a lower administrative cost per exception and fewer interrupted orders. For Shift4, a product that remains useful inside daily workflows can support retention and cross-selling. Neither is a measured outcome in the notes. Pricing, adoption and the incidence of failed orders or incorrect cashback are not disclosed.

Availability of an API also differs from deployment by a merchant's software provider. The release establishes the product change; the benefit depends on an integration using it correctly, presenting appropriate substitution choices and reconciling the resulting balances.
