# Valve is ending physical Steam gift cards over scam concerns

Valve’s retail-card withdrawal separates a fraud-driven distribution decision from the continuing Steam Wallet and the redemption of cards already sold.

[Valve](https://giftcard.news/company/valve/) is ending the retail supply of physical Steam gift cards after concluding that repeated anti-scam measures had not stopped their misuse. The policy, made public on June 10, 2026, leaves digital gifting and redemption of cards already sold in place. [\[S01\]](#article-source-1) [\[S03\]](#article-source-3)

For the gift-card industry, this is a withdrawal of distribution, not the closure of the underlying wallet. It separates the commercial benefit of reaching shoppers in stores from the harm associated with a payment product used outside its intended purpose.

## Why a gaming platform had a retail card

Valve created Steam in 2003 as a digital-content distribution channel. The company develops games and technology as well as operating the platform through which other developers reach customers. Steam Wallet gives that ecosystem a common spending balance rather than requiring a separate gift product for each title. [\[S04\]](#article-source-4)

Steam’s store describes gift-card value as usable for games, software, hardware and other purchases on the platform. Its developer documentation also requires the Steam Wallet for in-game purchases handled through its microtransaction integration. The wallet is therefore part of the platform’s commercial infrastructure, not just a seasonal gifting accessory. [\[S02\]](#article-source-2) [\[S05\]](#article-source-5)

Physical cards made that digital balance purchasable through a shop counter. They could reach a buyer using cash or somebody choosing a present without first navigating an online gifting service. Losing that channel has a genuine distribution cost even though other payment routes remain.
