Announced in May 2022, it combined Azure infrastructure, specialist support and plans to expand the bank's workforce in Puerto Rico while developing banking services for international customers and enterprise partners. The chronology starts with Microsoft's Spanish-language release on May 9, followed by its English version on May 18. Both describe an infrastructure-bank ambition and more than 30 open positions. They are two versions of the same corporate announcement. ## A technology relationship tied to an operating base The releases identified Azure, local Microsoft support and training, and access to specialists in security, cloud services, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Zenus CIO [Pedro Martinez](https://giftcard.news/person/pedro-martinez/) credited Microsoft's fast-track programme and banking accelerators with helping the bank get to market. Puerto Rico's Department of Economic Development and Commerce expressed support through comments attributed to secretary Manuel Cidre. At the time, Zenus was presenting a model in which an international banking licence and digital delivery could serve customers beyond Puerto Rico. The enterprise element mattered: a partner business could bring the customer relationship while Zenus supplied banking capabilities. That arrangement requires more than a front-end application. The underlying institution needs usable operational data, financial controls and staff able to respond when a customer or partner needs help. ## HSO's implementation record explains the architecture A case study from implementation partner HSO describes an earlier problem with fragmented data and a shared data lake built to support processing, reporting and analysis. It identifies Dynamics 365 Customer Service, Sales, Finance and Marketing, together with Power BI, Power Platform and Microsoft 365, as parts of the wider operating environment. A cloud platform provides infrastructure; business applications organize the work performed on top of it; a data foundation allows information to be reused across functions. The bank still has to connect those layers to its account and payment systems. HSO's statement that the architecture was designed for millions of transactions and customers describes intended capacity, not an observed customer total. ## The practical value was connecting people with information In HSO's published interview transcript, Martinez discusses the importance of an architecture for securing data and sharing it among microservices. Marketing chief John Woods describes using a broad Microsoft platform across business processes, including customer contacts arriving by phone, email, web or chat and employees collaborating through Teams when a query needs another specialist. This is the part of the architecture that a user eventually experiences. A support conversation becomes less effective if the employee can see the message but not the relevant account history, or must repeat a handoff without context. A common operating environment can make that information available to the appropriate team. The published account explains the design logic; it does not provide measured reductions in handling time, complaint rates or service costs. ## Thirty-plus vacancies were a recruitment signal The May announcement listed open roles across IT, product, marketing, banking and commercial operations. The range indicates that the expansion involved running and distributing banking services as well as building technology. It was also a dated opportunity for skilled workers in San Juan, alongside teams described as growing in Latin America, Europe and the United States. An advertised vacancy is a position the employer wants to fill. It is not evidence of a completed hire, a net increase in employment or a job retained for a specified period. The releases did not report a filled-position count, payroll expansion, salary bill or quantified public incentive. The reliable number remains more than 30 open positions at the time of the announcement. ## Cloud infrastructure and core banking are different decisions The next dated technology milestone came on October 26, 2022, when Finxact announced that Zenus had selected its core platform. Finxact said it would work with Microsoft and HSO, with integration into Zenus's Microsoft environment by HSO. That later announcement distinguishes the core-banking layer from the broader cloud and business-application relationship established in May. The technology stack continued to evolve. Those later decisions should be dated in their own right; the 2022 announcement does not establish the precise architecture of every service operating today. ## What the partnership can establish Microsoft's August 2024 regional financial-services review again identified Azure as supporting Zenus's international banking expansion. It adds continuity to the relationship, without providing a separate quantified measure of Azure's contribution to Zenus revenue or transaction growth. Microsoft's own shared-responsibility guidance also explains why cloud adoption is an operational choice rather than a blanket compliance guarantee. Responsibilities depend on the service model, while customers retain duties over their data, identities and configurations. Applied to a bank, the useful question is how platform capabilities support its controls and processes. ### Later AI-sector evidence puts supplier dependence in context The original Microsoft announcement included access to AI and machine-learning expertise. In its 2024 AI survey, the Bank of England and FCA asked financial firms to name providers of cloud, models and data. The concentration of those mentions shows why a shared technology foundation also brings questions about supplier dependence, integration and continuity.
