A [Sony Interactive Entertainment](https://giftcard.news/company/sony-interactive-entertainment/) patent application published on September 17 describes using a game controller to transfer gift-card information to a console, including an example in which the screen confirms receipt and displays the card's balance.

US application publication 20260273403 A1 sets out a broader controller-based information-transfer system. Gift cards are a specific example within that system, alongside other payment methods and non-payment uses. The document names Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. of Tokyo as applicant. The application was filed on March 17, 2025\. Its September publication makes the proposed design public; it does not establish a granted patent, a feature available on an existing controller or a scheduled product release.

## A controller as the route to payment information

The described process begins when a controller detects a nearby electronic device. The controller emits a signal, receives an acknowledgement, obtains payment-method information and relays that information to the console. Possible implementations include NFC, Bluetooth and detection of physical contact. Audible, visual or vibration signals can indicate that the intended device and controller are interacting. In paragraph 0072, Sony describes obtaining the information from a credit card or gift card instead of relying on the player's separate electronic device. The controller passes the information to the console, whose display can indicate that the gift card was received and show a balance. The example is intended to accommodate a player whose phone or other device is unavailable.

Receiving the information and completing a payment are separate steps in the wider flow. The specification describes the console checking payment information through a server before processing a payment event. A card being brought near a controller therefore should not be read as a demonstrated, unconditional purchase or redemption.

## A proposed interface for existing gaming purchases

Sony Interactive Entertainment is the Sony Group business behind PlayStation hardware, games and network services. Its application identifies purchases, gaming credits and in-app transactions as reasons for managing payment information, including gift-card details. The commercial idea is to let the controller mediate information that might otherwise be entered through another device or an on-screen process. For gift cards, the specific disclosure concerns moving credentials into the console experience and presenting confirmation, rather than issuing a new gift-card product.

The publication contains 20 claims covering the controller-transfer method, controller and software implementations. It names no participating gift-card issuer, acceptance network, supported card range or launch date. Nor does it establish that standard gift cards already have the hardware needed for the described interaction.

The new information is the published design and its explicit gift-card use case. Compatibility, commercial deployment and the eventual scope of any patent protection remain separate questions.
