# Square starts automatic Bitcoin payment rollout, with gift cards handling refunds

Square’s automatic Bitcoin rollout brings a less familiar consequence: refunds use merchant gift cards, linking new payment acceptance to stored value.

[Square](https://giftcard.news/company/square/) began rolling out automatically enabled Bitcoin payments to eligible US sellers on March 30, 2026, with payments converted to dollars by default. For the gift-card industry, an important part of the change happens after checkout: Square directs Bitcoin refunds onto a gift card that can be used at the merchant. The payment method and the refund method consequently differ. A customer can arrive with Bitcoin and, after a return, leave with spending value restricted to the store. That makes stored value part of the operating design of the new acceptance route. [\[S02\]](#article-source-2)

## Why Block wants a wider acceptance network

Square is [Block](https://giftcard.news/company/block/)'s merchant-payments business. Block outlined the Bitcoin acceptance plan in May 2025, describing it alongside a broader Bitcoin business that includes consumer access through [Cash App](https://giftcard.news/company/cash-app/). The 2026 automatic rollout advances that earlier strategy; it is not the first announcement that Square intended to accept Bitcoin. [\[S04\]](#article-source-4)

Block's stated aim was to make Bitcoin usable in everyday commerce through existing point-of-sale hardware. The company described the Lightning Network as the means of delivering fast, low-cost transfers, with exchange calculations handled inside the Square experience. Those are the company's product claims, rather than measured savings across every merchant. [\[S04\]](#article-source-4)

Our reading is that automatic enablement reduces the work needed to add acceptance, while default dollar settlement avoids requiring a merchant to hold the asset. For a provider seeking more practical uses for Bitcoin, activating an existing merchant network can be more efficient than acquiring a new network one shop at a time. The rollout does not disclose that acquisition-cost comparison.

## The fee offer and the refund obligation

Square's current support documentation lists a zero processing fee through December 31, 2026, followed by
