The October 29 quarterly filing also showed that the restaurant chain recognized more revenue from redemptions of cards already outstanding at the start of the year. The two measures track different parts of the card business. Chipotle reports the amount as unearned revenue: it initially records balances as a liability, then recognizes revenue when guests use their cards. Its accounts separate the gift-card liability from the obligation tied to Chipotle Rewards. Its annual report says balances typically peak around year-end holiday purchases, which makes the same-month comparison more useful than the change since December. That $4.859 million increase describes older card balances being used. New cards sold and redeemed within the same year fall outside this measure.
