Banesco USA has highlighted unexpected gift card payment demands among the warning signs of financial scams targeting individuals and businesses. Its October 10, 2025 guide links those requests with impersonation, urgent messages and attempts to obtain sensitive account information.

The bank describes emails, texts and calls that appear to come from familiar organisations but ask the recipient to reveal financial details or approve a payment. Its recommended response is to verify the request through independently obtained official contact information, rather than relying on the message or caller.

Gift cards and prepaid cards appear in examples where a victim is told to settle an account or unlock a service. Banesco warns that an offender can use or resell card codes once they have been disclosed. It also identifies pressured wire, cryptocurrency and payment-app transfers
