A newly published US patent application from Multi Packaging Solutions describes gift-card packaging that pairs printed protective foil with a reference label, allowing a retailer or customer to look for signs that the covering has been replaced.
The US Patent and Trademark Office published application US 20260268807 A1 on September 10. It names Multi Packaging Solutions, Inc. as applicant and Ken Glinert as inventor. The application was filed on March 6, 2026 and refers to a provisional application filed on March 6, 2025. September's milestone is public disclosure of the application, not a patent grant or commercial launch. [S01]
Comparing the covering with its reference
The proposed assembly places a redemption code inside packaging formed from two joined panels. Foil conceals the code, while printing on that foil can be compared with information on an exterior reference label.
In one described version, the foil carries an alphanumeric serial marking and the label carries the corresponding reference marking. The intended check is whether the two match. A replacement covering with different markings would provide a visible reason to question the package. Other versions use patterns, holograms or colour gradients for comparison. [S01]
The distinction matters because simply covering a redemption code does not, by itself, tell a buyer whether that covering is the original one. The application proposes a way to make the covering identifiable against another feature on the package. Its statements about deterrence and detection describe the intended function, rather than independently measured fraud reduction.
The document also describes a separate activation code visible through a packaging window. A perforated panel can conceal enough of the code to prevent scanning until the panel is removed. Holographic features and reference information provide additional proposed inspection points. The redemption code remains covered until the customer opens the package and removes or scratches off its foil. [S01]
A packaging supplier's proposed approach
Multi Packaging Solutions appears among Smurfit Westrock's significant subsidiaries in the group's list as of December 31, 2025. Smurfit Westrock already markets gift and transaction cards, carriers, multipacks, sleeves and related fulfilment services. That establishes the applicant's industry context, without showing that these particular patent features are available in its commercial range. [S02] [S03]
The application contains 20 claims and describes configurations with a physical prepaid card as well as packaging containing a redemption code without a separate card. It does not identify a retailer rollout, manufacturing contract, product price or validated performance result.
For gift-card manufacturers and retailers, the publication makes a specific packaging approach available for scrutiny: compare the protective material with a reference before accepting the instrument. Whether that approach is adopted, proves effective in stores or ultimately receives patent protection remains unestablished by the published application.
