The distinction matters for retailers and payment providers because a merchant can receive a conventional payment without accepting cryptocurrency itself.

The guide identifies Bitrefill as an example of the gift card route. A customer purchases prepaid retail value with crypto and then redeems the resulting card under the retailer's terms. Businesses assessing this model need to distinguish a platform's worldwide brand list from the cards actually available for Denmark, including their currency and redemption territory. A brand appearing in an international catalog does not establish that every Danish store or website accepts its card.

UPay also discusses travel purchases and direct crypto checkout, naming Travala among the platforms in its overview. These purchases depend on the payment options offered for the particular booking or merchant. They differ from a converted card transaction, in which the conversion service handles the crypto balance while the merchant receives a payment through the card network.
