Giftcards.com introduced its own branded gift card in a product announcement dated May 26, 2024. Recipients could exchange the value for gift cards from more than 350 participating brands, giving the recipient the final choice after the original purchase. [S01]
An exchange step before spending
The announced product was available in physical and digital formats, in amounts from $25 to $500, without a purchase fee. Recipients used the card number and PIN, or the accompanying QR route, to redeem through Giftcards.com. Visa and Mastercard gift cards were excluded from the exchange selection. [S01]
| Feature | Terms described in the announcement |
|---|---|
| Value | From $25 to $500 |
| Format | Physical or digital |
| Choice | More than 350 participating brands |
| Redemption route | Exchange through Giftcards.com |
The product is a choice mechanism, rather than a payment card accepted directly at every participating brand. The recipient first selects a brand gift card and then uses that product under its own redemption conditions. [S01]
Who chooses, and when
A conventional brand gift card fixes the retailer at purchase. An exchangeable product moves that decision to the recipient. The giver still chooses the budget, but does not need to predict the recipient’s preferred merchant as precisely.
That flexibility introduces another step, so the quality of the exchange experience matters. Clear instructions, visible eligible choices and accurate balance handling determine whether the recipient experiences the selection as useful freedom or additional work.
The catalog size and denominations above describe the May 2024 announcement. They should not be read as a statement that every brand or term remains available today.
