Givex extended its Portal bulk-adjustment tool to allow balances to be set to zero on cards marked Fraud, Cancelled or Expired, according to Shift4 release notes published on April 10, 2026. The update was scheduled for April 15. [S01] [S02]
Shift4 presents the change as a way to avoid overstating client liabilities when residual balances remain against those statuses. The software can change the recorded balance; deciding whether value should be removed is a separate operational and legal question. [S01]
A merchant platform handling stored value records
Givex is part of Shift4, which completed its acquisition in November 2024. The parent’s annual report describes payments, software and related merchant services. Maintaining gift card records is one component of that wider operating relationship. [S03]
The commercial problem behind the update is reconciliation. If an operator considers a balance no longer valid but the platform continues to carry it, reporting can require a manual adjustment or investigation. A bulk tool may reduce repeated work across many records.
That potential efficiency also increases the importance of the selection criteria. Applying one action to a group of cards is faster than handling each individually, but an incorrect status or selection can affect more than one customer at once.
Status does not settle the treatment of funds
The release note names three eligible statuses; it does not instruct every client to clear every card bearing one of them. A fraud flag, cancellation or expiry label can describe different circumstances and should not be assumed to resolve the underlying entitlement.
As an example of why the distinction matters, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s gift card rules distinguish the expiration of a card from the treatment of its underlying funds. Coverage and exceptions depend on the product. A software status is therefore not a substitute for the applicable rules. [S04]
The update does not itself announce a change to cardholder terms or a new right for a merchant to keep unspent value. The reporting rationale should not be turned into a claim that all expired balances are immediately available as revenue.
More context in programme reports
The same release adds merchant names and identifiers, card descriptions and tax-identification fields to a loyalty-money expiration report. A separate dashboard widget tracks membership changes over time. These are reporting additions rather than evidence that balances have actually been adjusted. [S01]
For merchants, better context can make an exception easier to trace to the relevant programme or location. For Shift4, dependable reporting supports the value of the broader software relationship. Neither company reports a measured reduction in reconciliation cost from this release.
The April 2 schedule described system releases as included for clients, so this notice concerns an enhancement to an existing service rather than a disclosed new fee. Its practical value depends on accurate data and authorised use. This article is journalistic reporting and does not constitute legal advice. [S02]
