Mobile Money has compared gift cards with reloadable prepaid cards in guidance published on October 3, 2025. The article considers whether a recipient needs a one-off gift or an account for repeated spending and money management.
It distinguishes gift cards restricted to a particular retailer from network-branded gift cards carrying brands such as Visa, Mastercard or American Express. That distinction means merchant restrictions cannot be assumed to apply to every gift card.
For ongoing use, Mobile Money describes prepaid products that can be reloaded and may offer direct deposit, mobile check deposit, ATM access, budgeting tools and fraud controls. The availability of those functions depends on the individual product and its network and program terms.
