Toluna announced a partnership with NeoCurrency on 11 July 2019 that added a Bitcoin gift card to the rewards available to members of its research community. Participants could exchange their accumulated points for a digital card with a stated value of $20, with cryptocurrency supplied through MyBitCards.com. [S01] [S02]

The offer was tied to participation in Toluna's community, where members shared opinions about brands, products and services. In this context, “influencers” referred to research-community participants, rather than a social-media creator campaign. [S01]

Toluna cited feedback from an internal community poll as the reason for adding the option. The release did not disclose the sample size, question wording or fieldwork details, so the poll provides context for the product decision without establishing wider consumer demand. [S01]

Choice and fulfilment in participant incentives

For research platforms, reward choice is part of the participant relationship. A person may value a particular redemption option, but its presence in a catalog does not by itself demonstrate stronger participation, better retention or more reliable research responses. The announcement offered no comparative evidence on those outcomes.

The companies described technical controls including IP address allowlists and blocklists, event-based fraud triggers and the ability to deactivate reward links. These were descriptions of the intended controls. They were not accompanied by an independent security assessment or loss-rate data. [S01]

NeoCurrency's role brought reward delivery into an established points programme, while MyBitCards.com supplied the cryptocurrency redemption component. That division made the hand-off between points, card delivery and redemption especially important: each stage needed to be understandable to the participant.

The confirmed development was a new reward option in July 2019. For a programme considering the same category, denomination, eligibility, redemption support and conversion terms would be the practical details to resolve before assessing whether it suited the audience.
