UPay has described several routes for spending cryptocurrency in Spain, including buying retailer gift cards through Bitrefill. Its May 2026 guide brings that route together with examples of direct merchant acceptance and crypto-funded card spending.

With a gift card, the crypto purchase and the retailer’s redemption transaction are separate steps. Bitrefill’s Spain catalog explains that customers select a card and value, pay using a supported method and then redeem the code according to the retailer’s instructions.

UPay’s guide also identifies selected cafes and other businesses that it says accept crypto through payment processors. It recommends confirming a merchant’s payment options before relying on them.

A crypto-funded payment card is a further option discussed. UPay describes conversion into euros for a card transaction, which differs from a merchant receiving cryptocurrency directly.

For gift card distributors and payment providers, the distinction concerns where conversion and acceptance occur. The guide presents retailer vouchers, processor-enabled merchant payments and card-network transactions as different ways to connect a crypto balance with a purchase.
