Worldline, ING and Mastercard reported a live AI-agent payment between an ING cardholder and a merchant in the Netherlands on June 2, 2026. The partners described it as Europe's first end-to-end agentic payment in production, a claim made in their joint announcement.

The purchase began with a search for a wedding anniversary gift. A merchant's AI agent identified concert tickets within the customer's budget and presented a selection. The transaction proceeded only after the customer explicitly approved the purchase.

ING acted as the issuing bank and authorized the transaction. Worldline processed the payment through its issuing and acquiring platforms, while Mastercard supplied the card network and Agent Pay framework. The transaction carried identifiers showing the issuing bank that an agent was involved.

The partners said the underlying infrastructure also operated across Belgium. The reported purchase itself involved the Netherlands; the release did not document separate completed purchases in every market supported by that infrastructure.

Worldline executive Madalena Cascais Tomé said the transaction demonstrated its acceptance, acquiring, authentication and issuer-processing capabilities. Mastercard executive Brice van de Walle emphasized agent identification, merchant integration and issuer visibility as parts of the network framework.

The companies described recurring payments and delegated purchases within predefined limits as areas for further exploration. Those potential uses were separate from the single consumer-approved transaction reported at the launch.
