Chipotle Mexican Grill reported $131.286 million in gift-card liabilities at the end of September, down from $141.010 million a year earlier. The October 29 quarterly filing also showed that the restaurant chain recognized more revenue from redemptions of cards already outstanding at the start of the year. The two measures track different parts of the card business. [S1] [S2] [S4]
Liability was lower at the same point in the year
The end-of-September obligation fell by $9.724 million, or about 6.9%, compared with the same date in 2025. Chipotle reports the amount as unearned revenue: it initially records balances as a liability, then recognizes revenue when guests use their cards. Its accounts separate the gift-card liability from the obligation tied to Chipotle Rewards. [S1] [S2] [S3]

Point-in-time accounting liability. Issuance, redemption and breakage affect it; the filing does not decompose the decline. Neither sales nor cash in escrow.

The company entered 2026 with $174.600 million in gift-card liabilities. Its annual report says balances typically peak around year-end holiday purchases, which makes the same-month comparison more useful than the change since December. The filing does not show how much of the year-on-year decline came from issuance, redemption or the accounting estimate for balances unlikely to be used. [S1] [S2] [S3]
More revenue came from cards outstanding at the start of the year
For the first nine months of 2026, Chipotle recognized $80.694 million from redeeming cards that were outstanding at the start of the year, up from $75.835 million in the corresponding 2025 period. That $4.859 million increase describes older card balances being used. New cards sold and redeemed within the same year fall outside this measure. [S1]

Chipotle treats breakage separately, estimating how much card value is unlikely to be redeemed and adjusting for any amounts expected to be remitted under unclaimed-property rules. The latest filing does not give a new gift-card sales total or a redemption rate. Its customer site continues to list physical cards, e-gifts and bulk orders, along with balance checks at U.S. restaurants. The filing disclosed no change to those purchasing options. [S1] [S3] [S5]
