JPY1,000 JCB gift cards ranked first among September inquiries from customers looking to sell vouchers to J-market, according to findings released by the Japanese reseller on October 14. The denomination moved up one place from August, while JPY5,000 JCB gift cards held fourth position. [S01]

The results cover inquiries submitted through J-market's website from September 1 to September 30. The company publishes separate rankings for its buyback and sales activities. They describe interest expressed to one reseller, not completed transactions or the size of Japan's gift-card market.

Cash conversion and the limits of inquiry rankings

Several gift products appeared as new entries in the September buyback top ten. JPY1,000 nationwide department-store certificates ranked sixth, JPY2,000 QUO Card products eighth, JPY1,000 children's gift certificates ninth and JPY5,000 Hankyu Tomonokai shopping bonus vouchers tenth. JPY1,000 VJA gift cards rose two places to seventh. [S01]

The same release gives dated cash-conversion terms for two of those products: a JPY1,000 department-store certificate had a JPY970 buyback quote and a JPY5,000 Hankyu Tomonokai bonus voucher a JPY4,850 quote on October 9. Both amount to 97% of face value. These quoted discounts put a price on the proposed move from restricted spending value to cash; they do not establish that holders accepted the offer. [S01]
