J.Jill recognised approximately USD6.5 million in revenue from gift-card redemptions and breakage during the first half of fiscal 2026, up from USD6.2 million in the comparable period a year earlier.
The clothing retailer disclosed the figures in its September 9 Form 10-Q for the 26 weeks ended August 1. The USD300,000 difference represents an increase of about 4.8%, calculated from the rounded amounts. For the second quarter alone, the combined measure was approximately USD3 million in both years. [S01] [S02]
The disclosure provides an activity measure alongside the value of cards still outstanding. It combines two ways previously deferred gift-card value becomes revenue: customer redemption and breakage, which concerns amounts expected to remain unused. It does not separate those contributions, so the increase cannot be read as an equivalent rise in customer redemption alone.
Revenue and remaining balances tell different stories
J.Jill reported USD5.726 million of unredeemed gift cards at August 1, compared with USD7.370 million at January 31. That is a USD1.644 million reduction in the balance over the first half. [S01]

| August 1, 2026 | 5.726 USD million |
The revenue total includes cards carried into the reporting period as well as cards issued and redeemed during it. Consequently, the USD6.5 million should not be treated as revenue solely from the opening balance. The filing does not provide a separate total for new card issuance or a gift-card roll-forward allocating every movement between opening and closing balances.
Nor is the full contract-liability total a gift-card figure. J.Jill's USD6.091 million of contract liabilities also includes USD365,000 associated with an upfront payment under its private-label credit-card agreement. Keeping that component separate leaves the USD5.726 million gift-card obligation.
A programme spanning stores and digital shopping
J.Jill sells women's apparel, footwear and accessories through stores and its direct channel. It ended the quarter with 255 stores, and its direct channel accounted for 46.4% of first-half net sales. Group sales fell 2.7% to USD299.3 million over the same six months. [S01]
Its existing gift-card terms allow merchandise purchases in stores, through its catalogue and online. Physical and electronic cards are issued by J.Jill Gift Card Solutions, a subsidiary named in the company's filing. The consumer terms say the cards have no fees or expiration date. Recognition of breakage in the financial accounts is therefore separate from a customer's contractual expiry date. [S01] [S03]
Across the consolidated gift-card programme, first-half redemption and breakage revenue rose from approximately USD6.2 million to USD6.5 million. The disclosure does not split that revenue between stores, catalogue and online orders, so it cannot establish which channel drove the increase. [S01]
