Blackhawk Network has put digital gift cards inside TikTok Shop, allowing shoppers to buy branded value without leaving the app. Announced on May 12, 2026, the integration supports a shopping journey in which digital cards and physical products can sit in the same cart. [S01]
The change gives brands another point of sale for stored value. A viewer interested in a brand can buy a gift card without choosing a specific size, colour or product for the eventual recipient. That separates the initial purchase from the later decision about what to redeem.
BHN brings distribution; TikTok brings discovery
BHN’s announcement cited connections with more than 19,000 brands across its wider gift card and rewards network, not specifically the TikTok Shop launch. [S01]
TikTok Shop’s US rollout dates to September 2023. Its original model combined tagged products in short videos and livestreams, brand showcases and an in-app marketplace. Sellers could also work with creators through commission-based affiliate marketing. These are the platform’s broader commerce tools; the gift card release does not disclose a specific creator commission or say that every programme applies to every card. [S02]
The two companies bring complementary assets. BHN supplies connections to branded value and the systems needed to distribute it. TikTok supplies an environment in which people encounter products through content rather than arriving only after a search. The partnership connects those assets at the point of purchase.
The business case for an in-app gift card
BHN said the integration could link digital cards to creator campaigns and seasonal moments. Its executives presented the launch as an acquisition channel and stressed the unified checkout across physical and digital goods. Those are the company’s stated aims, rather than published results from the new channel. [S01]
For a brand already paying to attract attention, a gift card offers an additional transaction to capture that interest. The seller receives a commitment to future spending with the brand, while the buyer postpones the final product choice. For BHN, another storefront can increase the usefulness of its distribution network. For TikTok, cards expand the kinds of products that can be bought within the shopping experience.
The attraction is strongest where product uncertainty would otherwise interrupt a purchase. A creator may persuade someone that a brand would make a good gift without settling which item the recipient wants. Stored value can bridge that gap. It cannot establish that the eventual recipient will redeem promptly or spend more than the card balance.
A new channel still has acquisition costs
The commercial comparison is with the sale that would otherwise occur. An existing customer moving a purchase from the brand’s website into TikTok is different from a new customer. Distribution and campaign costs therefore matter alongside the face value sold, and the agreement does not disclose how revenue or those costs are divided.
BHN’s announcement establishes an integrated sales route, but does not provide conversion, redemption or profitability results. [S01] The first purchase is only one part of the economics: delivery, customer support and the later redemption experience will determine whether content-led discovery produces a durable customer relationship.
