Finnish book club Kirjaviisas has introduced gift cards that let buyers prepay for a fixed number of curated book deliveries while leaving the reading choices to the recipient.
The September 10 announcement extends the company's subscription-based selection service into a redeemable gift format. Buyers can fund one, three or six packages at the price of the corresponding subscription, according to the release published by Helsinki's Messukeskus. [S01]
Fixed prepaid packages and recipient choice
The card's structure separates payment from the recipient's preferences. A buyer receives a PDF containing a redemption code by email; the recipient then supplies an address, reading interests and other wishes. The company's current gift-card page says redemption does not require a payment card.
Deliveries stop after the purchased packages have been sent. Continuing the service requires a separate decision by the recipient, rather than an automatically renewed subscription. The published purchasing page specifies a 12-month validity period from purchase and says prices include VAT. [S02]
For a gift-card program attached to a recurring service, that distinction matters: the recipient can use the prepaid entitlement without first accepting future billing. The offer funds the company's own book packages, rather than unrestricted spending or a balance accepted by multiple retailers.
The live gift selector on October 19 gives a concrete price comparison for the Surprise me package: one box costs EUR 19.90, three boxes EUR 59.70 and six boxes EUR 119, including VAT. The amounts are the displayed purchase totals. They do not establish sales volumes, redemption rates or prices for every reading theme. [S02]

Kirjaviisas is operated by Unattended Oy. Its announcement describes a monthly service built around three curated second-hand books, with themes ranging from crime to children's books. A recipient can combine themes and tell the company what they would prefer to read or avoid.
Co-founder Pontus Aurdal presents the gift card as a response to the difficulty of choosing books for someone whose existing collection the buyer may not know. The launch provides a mechanism for that choice to happen after payment; the company has not published gift-card sales or redemption results.
The firm also plans to sell the cards at the Helsinki Book Fair on October 22–25. That future exhibition is a distribution opportunity described in the announcement, not evidence of completed event sales.
The current catalogue also offers four-book packages delivered every other month, alongside the monthly three-book Surprise me option. The homepage and gift selector are not fully aligned: the homepage says sci-fi and classics are available only in the four-book package, while the gift selector still displays separate monthly options. The comparison therefore uses only the clearly displayed Surprise me choices. [S02] [S04]
The general terms, last updated June 18, distinguish a recurring subscription from the gift-card clause: an unused gift card is valid for 12 months from purchase, is not redeemable for cash and requires the recipient to create an account and enter the code. Delivery is within Finland. The specific gift page explicitly says no payment card is required and that deliveries stop when the prepaid boxes run out. [S02] [S03]
