Kudoboard has set out a framework for measuring the return on employee appreciation eCards, separating direct operating savings from broader workforce outcomes. Its July 31, 2026 guide asks employers to establish what a recognition program is intended to improve before deciding whether a paid platform is justified.
The direct cost comparison covers platform fees, staff administration, rewards, physical cards, printing and postage. For a financial return calculation, the guide subtracts program costs from attributed financial benefits, divides the difference by program costs and expresses the result as a percentage.
Kudoboard recommends measuring activity before drawing conclusions about business performance. Its proposed indicators include recognition reach, contribution rates, contributors per board, on-time milestone delivery and feedback on whether messages feel personal. Participation differences between teams can reveal an access or workflow problem that total message volume would miss.
The company treats retention, absence and productivity as separate, later outcomes. It says employers should state assumptions, compare consistent periods and assign only a reasonable share of any change to recognition. Compensation, management, workload and development opportunities also affect those outcomes.
For delivery, Kudoboard describes collaborative boards with text, images and video, scheduled messages, recurring milestone automation and participation analytics. The guide says these features create value only when they resolve an actual administrative need and employees use them consistently.
Gift cards and monetary contributions are optional additions to the message. Kudoboard says recipients can use contributed funds for available retailer gift cards or prepaid Visa options, or make a charitable donation. The funding can come from an employer budget or contributions from colleagues.
The practical guidance also distinguishes public celebrations from private appreciation and recommends asking employees about their preferences. Specific messages about a person’s contribution are presented as the basis of recognition, with a reward complementing rather than replacing that message.
