Weinheim's Zweiburgen-Gutschein programme has more than EUR120,000 in outstanding local gift-card value, the city reported on October 1, as it added two redemption locations and warned that its earliest balances will begin expiring at the end of 2026.

The update puts the programme at 54 acceptance locations. It names Wellness am Wald and trading-card shop Endless-Cards as the latest businesses joining a network intended to keep gift spending within the local economy. [S01]

The EUR120,000 figure describes value still available to spend. It is neither a quarterly sales figure nor evidence that the entire amount is approaching expiry. The city did not disclose the portion attributable to the first, 2023 cohort.

More places to spend existing value

Wellness am Wald, on Hauptstraße, will accept the voucher for wellness treatments, textiles and accessories. Endless-Cards, on Bahnhofstraße, adds a specialist retailer serving collectors and players of trading-card games.

The programme already spans shopping, food, hospitality and services. Its website confirms the 54-location total reported by the city on October 1 and says holders can load different amounts and redeem their value in parts. That permits one gift balance to support purchases at more than one participating business. [S01] [S02]

The additional outlets broaden the choice available to holders without requiring a new gift product. For participating merchants, the opportunity is to attract spending from value already committed to the local network. The city's update does not quantify the sales either new member expects to receive.

First balances approach the programme's expiry cycle

The Zweiburgen-Gutschein began in 2023. Weinheim says the first balances will expire at the end of 2026 and is encouraging holders to check both the amount remaining and the applicable deadline. Checks are available through the programme website or the checkout app at participating locations.

For the operator, redemption and issuance now sit alongside another practical task: helping the earliest recipients recognise that their balances have a time limit. An outstanding-value total shows potential local spending; it cannot reveal how quickly holders will use it or how much will eventually expire.

Balance visibility also appears in consumer research, although it cannot predict Weinheim's expiry outcomes. In a separate 2024 online survey of 1,501 US respondents published by Statista from Accenture data, 36% wanted simpler balance checking and 35% wanted reminders of unused balances. These historical US preferences concern the same practical functions; they do not measure demand among German holders. [S03]

The scheme is a joint initiative of the city, its trade association, IG Marktplatz and Lebendiges Weinheim. Vouchers are sold online and through local outlets, including bookshops and the tourist information office. Its website identifies stadtguthaben as the technology system supporting the programme. The October disclosure provides a current balance and network snapshot. It leaves open the longer-term measures of programme performance, including cumulative purchases, completed redemptions and the value remaining in each issuance year.
