CleverCards and Mastercard extended their partnership on February 11, 2021 to support digital card use across Europe. CleverCards also joined Mastercard's Fintech Express program, gaining access to business-development teams and the network's commercial relationships.

The companies described a platform through which businesses could send a digital prepaid Mastercard to an email address or phone number. Recipients could spend online or add the card to supported mobile wallets for contactless purchases in stores.

The announced use cases included employee expenses, gig-worker payments, insurance compensation and airline payouts. Company-branded gift cards, incentives and customer rewards were another application, allowing organizations to distribute value digitally instead of arranging physical card delivery.

The collaboration built on work that began in 2019 and included Mastercard's Digital Enablement Service and processing capabilities. The partners said the closer relationship would help expand CleverCards' business. That represented their intended commercial outcome rather than reported deployment across every European market.
