Mastercard announced the Select Digital Gift Card with CleverCards and Appreciate Group on 16 December 2019. The launch combined digital delivery with a prepaid Mastercard that the recipient could activate for online purchases or add to a mobile wallet. Mastercard described it as a European first; that market-first claim was not independently established. The counterpart announcement now hosted by Love2shop is dated 2 December 2019 and separately describes the UK launch. [1] [2]
Token activation and the published load range
The merchant FAQ provides later product context. Its undated page, retrieved as complete indexed text on 19 October 2026 with a reported crawl five days earlier, specifies a per-card load range of £20 to £200. These are range endpoints, not two fixed denominations. They are not presented here as terms verified at the 2019 launch. [3]

That FAQ separately limits an order to ten cards and a transaction to £500. Activation requires a UK resident with a valid UK mobile number, aged at least 18. It distinguishes a gift token valid for 24 months after purchase from a prepaid card valid for 24 months after conversion. Those two clocks do not promise every recipient an unconditional four-year card life. [3]
At launch, Mastercard and the counterpart release described acceptance at more than 6,400 outlets across 61 UK retail brands. Those historical network figures are not a current inventory or evidence of sales. The counterpart explains that activation converts the gift into a prepaid Mastercard and that mobile access uses two-factor authentication. Sending the gift and activating the spending instrument are therefore separate steps. [1] [2]
The launch named John Lewis, Topshop and Argos among participating brands and Highstreetvouchers.com as the sales channel. Speaking at the time, Mastercard’s Scott Abrahams presented the partnership as a way to widen payment choice. CleverCards founder and chief executive Kealan Lennon used a digital £50 note as an analogy, rather than defining a fixed denomination. Appreciate Group’s then chief executive Ian O’Doherty made the UK-first claim, and the companies described plans for further debit-card and corporate-reward uses. These were launch statements and plans, not verified subsequent deployments or present-day cross-border acceptance. [1]
The archived announcement establishes the product launch, while the later FAQ describes published operating conditions. Direct merchant-page access was blocked during this review; live checkout availability and the separately linked full cardholder agreement were not verified. The FAQ range should therefore be read with that source and date limitation. [3]
