AllStar has highlighted the use of multiple reward types within employee recognition programs, drawing on Incentive Research Foundation work in a June 12, 2019 article.

In AllStar’s account of the research, program designers selected gift cards when quick delivery and ease of administration mattered. Merchandise was associated with creating excitement or linking an award with the sponsor’s brand, while travel offered an experience with greater cost and administrative demands.

The company also emphasized how an award is presented. Recognition of individuals and teams in a shared celebration was described as an important part of the experience, alongside the reward itself.

AllStar distinguished measurable business outcomes, such as sales and productivity, from broader objectives including morale, teamwork and workplace culture. It warned that evaluation is often overlooked even when sponsors intend a program to support those goals.

The provider recommended establishing a reliable starting point and measuring effectiveness so later decisions can draw on results. It also argued that outside incentive specialists can contribute to strategy and program design, beyond sourcing rewards or operating the technology platform.
