BJ’s Wholesale Club says it has awarded more than USD25 million in its own gift cards to more than 30,000 hourly team members, using the cards for a large employee-recognition round tied to its 42nd anniversary. [S01]

The company’s October 13 announcement says surprise celebrations took place that morning at clubs and distribution centres across its footprint. Individual cards range from USD250 to USD2,000, with amounts based on employees’ tenure.

Own-brand value as an employee award

The benefit is a BJ’s gift card. It should not be described as a cash wage payment or an open-loop card that can be spent at any merchant. The company does not disclose a gift-card technology or service provider for the distribution. [S01]

BJ’s calls the round its largest recognition award to date. That is the company’s description of the programme; the release does not provide a full history of earlier awards or independently measured effects on staff retention.

BJ’s existing customer gift-card programme provides separate, pre-award context. Its SEC filing reports deferred gift-card revenue of USD16.274 million at August 2, 2025 and USD17.162 million at August 1, 2026. Both dates precede the October employee awards; the balances do not establish how those internally granted cards are accounted for. [S02]
