Mastercard expanded its Priceless Planet Coalition on October 20, 2020, adding financial institutions, merchants and other partners to a forest-restoration initiative. It also described plans to let cardholders exchange reward points for trees through gift catalogs and Mastercard Pay with Rewards.
The coalition's stated target was to restore 100 million trees over five years, working with Conservation International and the World Resources Institute. Initial restoration locations identified for the following year were in Kenya, Brazil and Australia.
The payment-related tools included direct donations, purchase round-ups and interfaces that banks or merchants could use within customer journeys. Partner campaigns included a German DZ BANK initiative aiming to fund one tree per new card, with a 50,000-tree target.
Mastercard additionally introduced an advisory committee including climate-policy specialists. The announcement described targets, planned redemptions and fundraising mechanisms. It did not establish that the full restoration target had already been achieved or that every rewards program offered tree redemptions.
