Runa announced its launch in Malaysia in March 2024, extending its digital reward and payout network after earlier expansions into Japan and Singapore. The service added local merchant choices and currency conversion in Malaysian ringgit.
Runa FX was described as providing round-the-clock conversion at real-time exchange rates. Businesses could access the Malaysia offering through the same Runa API integration used for their other supported markets.
Merchant examples in the announcement included Lulu Hypermarket, GrabFood, Trevo and Watsons. Runa said its global network had grown to more than 3,000 payout options, spanning digital gift cards, prepaid cards, charitable donations and subscriptions. That was a global figure, not a claim that all 3,000 options were Malaysian products.
The company positioned the launch around business-to-consumer payouts, employee rewards and incentives for recipients in Malaysia. It connected the expansion with the country's broader move towards digital payments and its MyDigital ambitions for 2030.
Runa also cited a PwC survey indicating that 14% of employees in Malaysia struggled to pay bills each month and that almost half lived from one payday to the next. The company used that context to discuss more flexible access to rewards, rather than reporting that its own product had resolved those financial pressures.
The concrete addition was local catalogue coverage and ringgit functionality within Runa's international distribution service. Programme operators could combine those capabilities with their existing integration to send locally relevant reward options.
